It is the easiest way to compromise a large number of systems. Make a minimum of one selection that is not "default" after installing your security program and modem/ router. This will make your system different from the vast "vulnerable" majority.

Review your Personal Firewall settings to make sure you are not giving "automatic" access to suspect software. If you are not sure of an individual entries origin or purpose, select "Block All". You may want to leave on "Automatic" for Symantec and Norton resources, especially applications and utilities you use on a regular basis, such a Adobe Reader, etc.
Make sure your Norton firewall is turned "on" (IS 2010 only). Do not operate your Norton firewall at the same time as the basic Windows® firewall. It will cause system problems and slow down your Internet connections substantially. Your LiveUpdates should be are turned "on" to always stay protected against new viruses unless your system administrator does them for you or advises you to the contrary.

Review your browser settings to check of which programs are "Internet enabled, especially the ones that for allow interactive outside access to your system.
In Internet Explorer® 7 & 8, open your browser and select: Tools> Manage Add-Ons> Enable or Disable. Review each item and decide on which programs you use on a regular basis. Disable the rest. Should this cause a problem with normal operations, you can always come back in here and enable the item again. Yes, it is a process of elimination.
